Glossary of Judo terminology
A "Shodan" (Promotion) consists of a Judo practitioner being awarded a higher rank. In order to be promoted, a practitioner must pass the promotion test. Eligibility for this test is based on the practitioner's age and years of Judo experience.
Promotions can be granted by the Kodokan, the All Japan Judo Federation , a Local Judo federation (Association or federation), a Provincial Judo federation (Association or society), or by Kodokan-recognized contest record in a competition organized or sponsored by the Kodokan Rank Recommendation Organization. Other considerations for promotions include the practitioner's character, mastery of the Judo spirit, understanding of Judo, degree of Judo Waza proficiency, and record of promoting Judo.
