Glossary of Judo terminology
Dojo (Training hall)
The "Dojo" is a martial arts practice area. The first Judo dojo was founded by Jigoro Kano as a 12-mat room. In addition to being the place where practitioners hone their Judo skills, the dojo is also the place for perfecting both body and mind with an eye toward the "Seiryoku zenyo" (Maximum efficiency) and "Jita kyoei" (Mutual benefit). The dojo is where one builds a base for courage and action that leads to a sense of wellbeing in oneself and all those around oneself.
Dojo are found all across Japan, from Japan's representative Kodokan, all the way down to the local dojo, and their gates are open to anyone.
