The life of Jigoro Kano
Jigoro Kano and the Olympics
Tokyo selected as Olympiad host
Opposition to a Tokyo Olympiad was growing within the IOC (International Olympic Committee), and due to higher-priority military spending in Japan, there was an increasing reluctance to lavish funds on domestic sports. In these conditions, voices opposed to a Tokyo Olympiad began to be heard even within Japan. Although the 79-year-old Jigoro found himself in a predicament, he saw the Olympics as "festival of peace", and was determined to fulfill his role in helping Tokyo formally win its hosting bid. In this spirit, he departed for Cairo and the IOC (International Olympic Committee) general assembly meeting.
Following a tumultuous general assembly meeting, Tokyo was formally declared host of the next Olympiad. This was due primarily to the character and personality of Jigoro, the oldest of the committee members, and to the respect in which he was held by the membership.
