All Japan Judo Championship

The All Japan Judo Championships is a men's and women's event held in April of each year to determine the champion of Judo's open-weight division. The official name of the women's event is the "Empress Cup All Japan Women's Judo Championships".
Japan's heavyweight representatives to the Olympiad or other world championships are selected at the All Japan Judo Championships. For Japan's Judo practitioners, the All Japan Judo Championships is one of the "triple crown" events; the other two being the summer Olympiad and the World Judo Championships.
The All Japan Judo Championships are conducted in a tournament format, under the Kodokan contest judging rules, with no consolation matches.
