Glossary of Judo terminology
The Judo contest time period under the Kodokan rules differs from that under the IJF rules.
Under Kodokan rules, a contest time period between 3 and 20 minutes is set in advance, with overtimes allowed.
Under IJF rules, the contest time period is 5 minutes for adults (both men and women), and 4 minutes for juniors (under age 20).
The Kodokan rules generally apply for the All Japan Judo Championships and for other major competitions held in Japan, and those contest time periods are 5 minutes, 4 minutes (high school), 3 minutes (junior high school), and 2 minutes (primary school).
