Belt

Belt

A belt is wrapped two times around the waist of the Judo uniform to hold it in place. The surplus length of belt hanging from the knot should be approximately 15 centimeters. In Kodokan Judo, the color of the belt indicates the practitioner's rank.

  • Beginner..Light blue belt
  • Grade 5 to 4 ... White belt (juniors and adults)
  • Ranks below the "Dan" class ... White belt
  • Grade 3 to 1 ... Purple belt (juniors)
  • Grade 3 to 1 ... Brown belt (adults)
  • Dan 1 to 5 ... Black belt
  • Dan 6 to 8 ... Red-and-white belt
  • Dan 8 to 10 ... Red belt

Although Kodokan rules call for a white line (1/5 of the belt width) at the center of the belt, IJF rules call for the same belt for both men and women.
