Glossary of Judo terminology
"Lapel area" refers to the lapel of a Judo uniform. In a right natural posture with a right-hand grip, the right hand grasps the lapel. In order to destabilize and throw the opponent toward the front corner, Tori (Player executing technique) grasps Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) lapel with his Tsurite (Lifting hand), and pulls it strongly downward. At the same time, he pushes Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) sleeve upward with his Hiki-te (Pulling hand) to effectively apply his force.
In Judo contests within Japan, the uniforms of visually-impaired contestants have a red marking on the lower part of the left lapel by mutual agreement, as a protective measure to ensure their safety.
