Kyu (Grade)

Kyu (Grade)

Judo employs a "Dan" (Degree) and "Kyu" (Grade) ranking system to indicate levels of skill. Judo was the first martial art to adopt the ranking systems used in Go and Shogi. These "Dan" (Degree) and "Kyu" (Grade) concepts were subsequently combined, resulting in the current ranking system. This system is also used in Kendo, Karate, and Kyudo (Japanese Archery).
In the adult divisions (generally, age 13 or higher), the ranking classes are 4th Kyu (Grade) and below, 3rd Kyu (Grade) to 1st Kyu (Grade), 1st Dan (Degree) to 5th Dan (Degree), 6th Dan (Degree) to 8th Dan (Degree), 9th Dan (Degree) to 10th Dan (Degree), and different Belt are assigned to each of these classes. In the junior divisions (generally, under age 13), the ranks are as follows: Beginner, 5th Kyu (Grade), 4th Kyu (Grade), 3rd Kyu (Grade), 2nd Kyu (Grade), and 1st Kyu (Grade).
