Glossary of Judo terminology
In a Judo contest, obtaining an advantageous Gripping techniques is an extremely important element in determining whether one wins or loses. For example, in a contest between two contestants with equal skill, the contestant with the best Gripping techniques will win 70 to 80% of the time. Performing one's best Waza from one's favorite Gripping techniques will often result in an Ippon gachi (Win by ippon). Moreover, preventing an opponent from obtaining his / her favorite Gripping techniques will prevent the opponent from executing a Waza with full power. In other words, the struggle for an advantageous Gripping techniques is the single most important element in Judo strategy.
