Gripping techniques

Every sport has fundamental postures and motions. These are important to Judo as well. The Gripping techniques places the contestants at an appropriate distance from each other (slightly closer than arm's length: the distance with elbow slightly bent), with the Tsurite (Lifting hand) grasping the opponent's lapel (with the Tsurite [Lifting hand]) just below the collarbone, and the Hiki-te (Pulling hand) grasping the opponent's sleeve at the outer side of his elbow. In the Gripping techniques stance, both hands are grasping lightly the opponent lightly, with both elbows slightly bent, with arms lightly pressed to the sides.
