Kan geiko (Winter training)
"Kan geiko" (Winter training) is early-morning practice performed during the winter season, for the purpose fostering mental toughness.
Rising early to practice in bitterly cold conditions is extremely unpleasant. Overcoming this unpleasantness instills a mental toughness that enables practitioners to overcome other difficult situations as well.
At the Kodokan, winter practice sessions are held from 5:30 to 7:00 each morning during the month of January. Summer practice sessions in high-temperature conditions are also held for the same purpose as winter practice.
