Glossary of Judo terminology
Jujutsu is an ancient martial art of Japan, and originated as a technique for seizing an opponent and defending oneself without the using the deadly force of weapons.
Jigoro Kano defined Jujutsu as "a martial art performed with empty hands or small arms". Jujutsu features vital-point striking techniques which utilize short swords, iron fans, and jutte, etc., and consists of many schools which focus variously on the art of arms concealment and bare-handed vital-point striking techniques, etc. Jujutsu was the foundation on which Jigoro Kano built his Kodokan Judo.
