Glossary of Judo terminology
Team contests are competitions between teams which are composed of several members. The number of team members varies according to the event.
There are two types of team contests: the "match-up" format in which opposing team members are paired against each other in order, and the "tournament" format in which the winner continues to fight the next opposing team member, etc., until he/she is defeated, or until no opposing members remain. These contests generally consist of contests between the prescribed number of contestants who have been selected from those entered in the event.
Although most team contests within Japan occur without regard to weight, the weight-division format is used in world team contests. If a "tournament" format contest ends in a draw, both contestants withdraw, and the next two contestants fight. If the team contest ends in a draw, two representatives from the opposing teams will fight to determine which team wins.
