Yoko-gake (Side body drop)

Yoko-gake (Side body drop)

Summary

This Yoko sutemi waza (Side sacrifice techniques) showcases quickness and intuition.

Features of this Waza

The Yoko-gake (Side body drop) Waza consists of sweeping the weight supporting leg and sacrificing one's own posture while throwing the opponent. This Waza is often used from a Kenka yotsu (Asymmetrical grips by the two opponents) stance.

Waza details

Tori (Player executing technique) advances to induce a counter advance by Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack), and as Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) steps forward, Tori (Player executing technique) turns his back toward Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) as if to bring him onto Tori (Player executing technique) back, then he executes the Yoko-gake (Side body drop).
Tori (Player executing technique) does this while lifting Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) with his Tsurite (Lifting hand), and pulling him forward to his Hiki-te (Pulling hand) so that Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) body is snugly against his own. Tori (Player executing technique) uses his Hiki-te (Pulling hand) side leg to catch Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) Tsurite (Lifting hand) side leg. As if performing a soccer inside kick, Tori (Player executing technique) sweeps Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) leg from behind with his own body going into a side-sacrifice posture. Using his own body weight, Tori (Player executing technique) pulls Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) straight downward to the floor.
This Waza can be used when the opponent aggressively attacks, or after an opponent's attack has been induced, etc. It can be performed in various ways, and showcases the combatant's quickness and intuition.

Waza usage tip

  • Tori (Player executing technique) destabilizes Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) by applying his own body weight to Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) legs, then uses a side-sacrifice posture from which to execute a strong sweep of Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) heel in the direction of Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) toes.
