Hikikomi-gaeshi (Pulling-down sacrifice throw)

Hikikomi-gaeshi (Pulling-down sacrifice throw)

Summary

Like the Tomoe-nage (Circular throw), this is a sacrifice Sute mi waza (Sacrifice techniques) in which the opponent is thrown over and behind one's head.

Features of this Waza

The Hikikomi-gaeshi (Pulling-down sacrifice throw) consists of pulling your opponent forward, and then throwing him over and behind your head.

Waza details

Tori (Player executing technique) steps forward, placing his foot midway between Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) feet, and uses his Hiki-te (Pulling hand) to pull Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) downward and destabilize him.
When Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) balance begins to destabilize in the forward and downward direction, Tori (Player executing technique) reaches over Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) shoulder with his Tsurite (Lifting hand) and grasps the back of Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) Belt.
At this time, Tori (Player executing technique) uses his Hiki-te (Pulling hand) either to scoop up Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) side, or he grasps Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) pants as if hugging him, and begins to shift his own Center of gravity in his backward direction.
While gripping the forward-leaning Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack), Tori (Player executing technique) rolls onto his back and throws Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) over and behind his head.
As he executes the throw, Tori (Player executing technique) kicks upward against the back of Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) thigh to propel is body through the throw.

Waza usage tip

  • Competitors must keep in mind that grasping an opponent's belt for longer than 6 seconds will result in a rules violation and a "Shido" (Instruction / Light penalty).
  • When rolling backward to execute the throw, Tori (Player executing technique) should maintain a tightly rounded posture in order to maintain the throwing force.
