Okuri-eri-jime (Sliding collar strangle)

Okuri-eri-jime (Sliding collar strangle)

Summary

This Waza strangles the opponent with his own collar.

Features of this Waza

The Okuri-eri-jime (Sliding collar strangle) Waza consists of using the opponent's own collar to strangle him.

Waza details

Tori (Player executing technique) grasps Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) collar with both hands from behind or from the side, and strangles him with it. With Tori (Player executing technique) hugging Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) from behind, Tori (Player executing technique) places one arm around Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) throat beneath his jaw and grasps Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) collar on the opposite side with that hand.
Tori (Player executing technique) wraps his other arm around Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) from beneath Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) armpit, and grasps Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) collar on the opposite side with that hand as well. Tori (Player executing technique) is then able to strangle Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) by pulling both hands toward each other.
In addition to the hand strangling maneuver, Tori (Player executing technique) presses against Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) from behind to increase the strangling force. When Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) adopts a prone position with his neck retracted to prevent strangling access to it, Tori (Player executing technique) can use both legs to hug Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) from behind and turn his chest upward to bend Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) body backwards, possibly creating a chance to place an arm around Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) neck.
The Okuri-eri-jime (Sliding collar strangle) is a frequently used Waza, and though it has many variations, depending on the opponent's posture, its defining feature is that Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) is strangled with his own collar.

Waza usage tip

  • When Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) is supine, this Waza can be applied effectively by scissoring Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) waist with both legs from behind to destabilize him.
