Glossary of Judo waza (techniques) terms
Ude-hishigi-sankaku-gatame (Triangular lock)
Summary
This Waza closely resembles the Sankaku-jime (Triangular strangle) Waza.
Features of this Waza
In the Ude-hishigi-sankaku-gatame (Triangular lock) Waza, Tori (Player executing technique) scissors Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) arm between his own clasped legs and locks the elbow joint.
Waza details
This Waza takes its name from the triangle-shape of the scissored legs which hold the opponent's arm. With Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) down on all fours, Tori (Player executing technique) grasps one of Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) arms and quickly scissors Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) with both legs from below and in front of Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack), firmly trapping the grasped arm together with Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) neck. Although this posture appears to pull Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) forward and down, Tori (Player executing technique) legs hold Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) body back, allowing only his arm to be pulled forward. From this posture, Tori (Player executing technique) thrusts out his stomach in a bridge-like posture to extend and bend Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) arm back, thereby locking the elbow joint.
In actual competition, Tori (Player executing technique) sometimes achieves this posture by grasping Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) arm and the back of his Belt (with Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) down on all fours), and then rolling over with him while wrapping both legs around him. In that case, Tori (Player executing technique) quickly scissors Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) arm and neck with his legs, grasps the wrist of that arm, and bends the arm back to lock the elbow joint.
This Waza resembles the Sankaku-jime (Triangular strangle), and has a high difficulty level.
