Notes
1. "Makura kesa gatame" (Pillow scarf hold) and "Ushiro kesa gatame" (Reverse scarf hold) are colloquial terms. The formal name for these holds is "Kuzure-kesa-gatame" (Modified scarf hold).
2. The "Kuzure" (Modified) prefix is used only with "Kesa" (Scarf) and "Kami shiho" (Top four-corner). It is not used with "Yoko-shiho-gatame" (Side four-corner hold), "Tate-shiho-gatame" (Straight four-corner hold), and "Kata-gatame" (Shoulder hold).
3. "Juji-gatame" (Cross lock) and "Ude-gatame" (Arm lock) are abbreviated names. Their formal names are "Ude hishigi juji gatame" (Cross lock), "Ude-hishigi-ude-gatame" (Arm lock).
